My Approach to Achilles Recovery

Achilles rupture recovery is about more than simply avoiding re-rupture. My goal is to help each client pursue the strongest, most complete recovery possible through individualized progression, evidence-based tendon loading, and attention to the entire lower extremity as a dynamic system.

More Than Just Avoiding a Bad Outcome

For the average Achilles rupture patient, the healthcare team’s primary priority is understandably to protect the healing tendon, avoid major setbacks such as re-rupture or other complications, and ultimately achieve a good functional recovery.

Those goals are essential—but I don’t believe simply avoiding a poor outcome should be the finish line.

Professional athletes often receive an extraordinary level of attention to the details of their rehabilitation because maximizing the quality of their final outcome matters tremendously. At Achilles Recovery Lab, I want to bring that same mindset and level of attention to every client.

You don’t need to be a professional athlete for your long-term strength, mobility, confidence, and ability to do the things you love to matter.

Progression Based on You — Not the Calendar

There is no single timeline that perfectly describes how every Achilles rupture should progress.

Two people at the same number of weeks after injury can have very different levels of strength, control, swelling, mobility, and tendon capacity.

That’s why I don’t simply look at the calendar and say, ‘You’re at week 12, so now you do this.’

I work closely with each client to understand how they are actually recovering and progress exercise and loading when it is appropriate for them.

The timeline matters—but your individual recovery matters more.

Progressive Tendon Loading

Progressive tendon loading is arguably the most important component of Achilles rehabilitation.

The healing tendon needs protection early, but recovery cannot remain focused on protection forever. At the appropriate milestones, gradually increasing the demands placed on the Achilles is essential for rebuilding strength and capacity.

The goal is to apply the right amount of stress at the right time—progressively challenging the tendon without unnecessarily exposing it to demands it is not yet prepared to handle.

Achilles Recovery Lab uses current scientific evidence, clinical reasoning, and each client’s individual recovery to help guide that progression.

Achilles Recovery Is More Than Calf Raises

A strong Achilles is essential—but rehabilitation does not end with tendon loading and calf strengthening.

The rupture can affect how you walk, balance, control your ankle, distribute force through the foot, and respond when movement becomes unpredictable.

A complete recovery should also address walking mechanics, balance, proprioception, foot and ankle strength, lower-extremity control, coordination, and preparation for the demands of everyday life, recreation, and sport.

If rehabilitation only prepares your Achilles for slow, controlled exercises in a predictable environment, it may not fully prepare you for the real world.

The ultimate goal is a tendon—and a lower extremity—that can tolerate the demands of real life.

Evidence-Based, But Individualized

Research gives us valuable information about tendon healing, loading, immobilization, strength development, tendon elongation, and rehabilitation progression.

But research still has to be applied to the individual.

Achilles Recovery Lab combines current scientific evidence with individualized Recovery Optimization Coaching to help clients understand why they are doing something, when it may be appropriate to progress, and which milestones matter throughout recovery.

Individualized Guidance Throughout Recovery

Achilles rupture recovery involves dozens of decisions about loading, exercise selection, progression, mobility, strength, balance, and return to higher-level activity.

Achilles Recovery Lab provides individualized Recovery Optimization Coaching designed to help you understand where you are in the recovery process, what milestones matter, and what should come next.

Rather than relying on a generic protocol, I look closely at how each client is progressing and use current scientific evidence and clinical reasoning to guide the next phase of recovery.

The goal is to provide the education, structure, progression, and attention to detail needed to pursue the strongest recovery possible.
